The chairmen of state chapters of the PDP have thrown their weight behind the
Ahmed Makarfi led caretaker committee

the decision of the party leadership which sacked Sheriff as chairman
They begged Sheriff to respect the party’s decision to remove him as chairman
The
Ahmed Makarfi-led caretaker committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has
received the backing of the chairmen of state chapters of the party.
Sheriff
is insisting he remains PDP chaiman
The
chairmen, led by Alhaji Yahaya Mohammed, paid a solidarity visit to Makarfi in
Abuja on Monday, June 27, The Nation reports.
They
promised to continue to respect the decision of the May 21 national convention
of the party that sacked Ali Modu Sheriff as chairman and set up the Makarfi
committee.
Mohammed,
who is the chairman of the Federal Capital Territory chapter, said they were
bound by the outcome of the convention.
He
noted that going against the decision of the convention would amount to
undermining the national leadership of the party.
Mohammed
called on Sheriff to respect the decision of the convention in the overall
interest of the party, maintaining that the Port Harcourt convention was a
product of the party’s constitution.
In
response, Makarfi said the crisis currently rocking the party was proof that
the PDP is worth struggling for.
He
stated that dragging the crisis for too long could have a negative impact on
the party.
Makarfi
added that the mandate of the caretaker committee was to bring everybody on
board and did not include dissolution of the existing state executives.
The
PDP has been embroiled in crisis and it keeps getting messier. The party sacked
Sheriff as its chairman at its May 21 national convention in Port Harcourt and
inaugurated a caretaker committee led by Makarfi.
Sheriff
has however, refused to accept his removal and keeps insisting he is the
chairman. On Friday, June 17, his supporters took over the gates of the PDP Wadata
Plaza headquarters in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.
As a result of the fallout, the former IG of police, Solomon Arase gave a one week ultimatum to the
party to resolve all its lingering crisis.
But
there seems to be no end in sight to the crisis as on Friday, June 24, he
alleged that Makarfi and the secretary of the committee, Senator Ben Obi were both working for a prominent chieftain of the ruling party, All
Progressives Congress (APC).
