Ronaldo nets the shootout winner
Real Madrid galactico Cristiano Ronaldo's two misses during normal time might have seen him painted as the villain of this Champions League final but in the end, they did not matter: the Portuguese netted the winning penalty in the shoot-out and Atletico Madrid suffered final heartbreak yet again.
Sergio Ramos headed Madrid ahead, just reward for their first half dominance, Antoine Griezmann missed a penalty soon after the break before Atletico substitute Yannick Carrasco equalised with just over 10 minutes to play. Just like in Lisbon two years ago, a derbi that was higher on drama and incident than quality or free-flowing football went to extra-time but on this occasion, it went even further. We were treated to penalties, in which Atletico right-back Juanfran was the only player to miss, clattering his spot-kick off the post. Ronaldo made him pay.
